Northern Territory
Darwin & Surrounds
The tropical capital with a crocodile you can swim next to
Darwin doesn't do subtle, and nowhere proves it better than Crocosaurus Cove, where the Cage of Death lowers visitors into a tank with a real saltwater crocodile. The city also carries history most Australians don't learn in school, bombed by Japan in 1942, still told properly at the Military Museum and the old wartime tunnels beneath the city. Watch the sunset over the harbour from Mindil Beach, one of the most reliably spectacular in the country. From here, Kakadu, Litchfield and Nitmiluk Gorge are all within reach, waterfalls and wildlife waiting a few hours down the road.
