Backwoods Distilling Co.

Craft whisky and gin distillery, Backwoods Distilling Co, was established in 2017 by Bree and Leigh Attwood. Starting out in a shed on their Yackandandah property, the couple moved the operation to open a distillery door and tasting room at the Yack Station Precinct, in February 2021. The distillery produces handcrafted batches of single malt and rye whisky, alongside a range of gins that highlight native botanicals. Their first whiskies were released in August 2020 and the team have already picked up several prestigious awards – including Champion Victorian Distiller 2024, World Whiskies Rye Category Winner 2024 and Best Single Malt Whisky 2022. With an ethos of using 100% Australian grains, local casks and native botanicals, Backwoods is proving to be one of Australia’s best examples of the quality of spirits produced locally. Backwoods’ distillery door offers the unique experience of enjoying a tasting paddle or G&T, while sitting beside the beautiful copper stills that make the spirits. Visitors also have the best chance of picking up exclusive whisky bottlings and seasonal gin releases.
