German settlement in Australia began in large numbers in 1838, with the arrival of immigrants from Prussia to Adelaide, in the then colony of South Australia. German immigrants became prominent in settling South Australia and Queensland. From 1850 until World War I, German settlers and their descendants comprised the largest non-British or Irish group of Europeans in Australia. Stroll through the Botanic Garden and along Adelaide's cultural boulevard and learn about the individuals who made an impact on our cultural life. This is an easy two-hour walk designed to make history interesting with just a touch of humour. See the buildings of the Botanic Garden, Brookman Hall, University of Adelaide, the South Australian Museum, Art Gallery, National War Memorial, Government House, Parliament House and hear stories of the German thinkers and doers who planned, lived and worked there.
