Description

The protected coastline adjacent to the town of Stansbury is known as 'Oyster Bay'. Prior to Stansbury being dedicated and named by Governor Musgrave in 1873, the actual town was also known as 'Oyster Bay'. During the 1800s, fishing vessels would often travel from Adelaide, across the Gulf of St Vincent, to harvest native oysters from the rich waters surrounding the area. Oyster Bay is now home to two Oyster Leases - Pacific Estate Oysters and Southern Yorke Oysters. Both oyster farms produce the widely known and commonly eaten Pacific Oyster, but have also reintroduced the native Australian Oyster back to the local waters. If you consider yourself an oyster connoisseur, the native oyster is well worth tasting.
