Description

Witness an astonishing marine spectacle, as the world's largest inshore reef, Montgomery Reef, is transformed by some of the biggest tidal changes on Earth. When the tide falls, the coral reef appears to rise from the ocean in a torrent of cascading water and a plethora of marine life makes its escape - octopuses, turtles, reef sharks and even dugongs, manta rays and dolphins. Situated between Camden Sound and Collier Bay, the reef forms part of Lalang-garram/Camden Sound Marine Park. Take a boat cruise or scenic flight tour from Broome or Kununurra, which are both serviced by flights from Perth (two hours and 30 minutes and three hours and 10 minutes, respectively). At around 300 square kilometres, Montgomery Reef is remarkable for its diversity of marine life, as well as the tidal changes - often over eight metres - that create this spellbinding spectacle. The marine park is home to six species of threatened marine turtles, humpback dolphins, dugongs, saltwater crocodiles, several sawfish species, and is the Southern Hemisphere’s most important humpback whale nursery. While you’re on the stunning Kimberley coast, be sure to visit the only horizontal waterfalls on Earth and explore over 1000 islands of the Buccaneer Archipelago.
