Bald Rock Dive Site

Bald Rock is located at the eastern end of Great Keppel Island, off Yeppoon, and is a great spot for smaller marine life. The rocky reef around Bald Rock varies in depth from 6 metres to 15 metres, and divers will find plenty of gutters, ledges and small caves to explore. With about 47 coral species, Bald Rock is one of the dive sites with relatively high diversity of corals. This site has a good coverage of hard corals, but divers will also see pretty gorgonians, spikey soft corals and sponges. While larger species like wobbegongs, stingrays and batfish can be seen, Bald Rock is a good spot to look for smaller critters. Nudibranchs are common, including large Spanish dancers. These colourful sea slugs come in such a wide variety of colours that they provide endless opportunities to underwater photographers. Also look out for flatworms, cuttlefish, octopus, pipefish, boxfish, crabs, shrimps, scorpionfish, lionfish and hawkfish. It is accessible only when conditions are calm enough to access the eastern side of Great Keppel Island. On the eastern tip, where the water is deeper, divers will start to see sea whips on the sand at the edges of the reef.
