Katherine Railway Trestle Bridge
The site comprises a low railway bridge consisting of concrete pylons with steel beams supporting timber railway sleepers and steel railway line. It was constructed in 1924 as part of the extension of the railway from Emungalan to Birdum. The railway trestle bridge, a concrete and steel bridge built in 1924 and located less than 600 metres north of the Katherine River Bridge, is significant because of its association with the North Australian Railway (NAR). From the 1890s the NAR was a major infrastructure initiative that opened the heart of the Top End to exploration, industry and development.
