WWII K5 Anti Aircraft Gun Battery Site, Coomalie Creek

The World War II Coomalie Airfield K5 Anti-Aircraft Battery site, constructed 1942 and located on a ridge overlooking Coomalie Airfield adjacent to the Stuart Highway, approximately 83km south of Darwin, is highly significant to the Territory as a relatively intact example of a wartime gun battery position developed for airfield protection against airborne attack. The battery site was occupied by the 2/1 Regiment's 225th Light Anti-Aircraft Battery. Both the airfield and gun battery played an important role in the Allied Force's campaign to drive back the invading Japanese in the South West Pacific Region. The site serves as a reminder of the impact and extent of Japanese air raids on north Australia and of air and artillery operations conducted in the region during World War II.
