Description

Hugh Gorge Junction is located on Section 5 of the Larapinta Trail in the West MacDonnell Ranges. After climbing over the rocky saddle you gradually descend until you reach the richly vegetated Hugh River. The trail then continues downstream through the lower part of Hugh Gorge, taking you into spectacular scenery, with the orange oxide wall of the gorge contrasting sharply with the bleached and water worn boulders of the watercourse. You may need to negotiate small stretches of very cold water. The strongest botanical feature of Hugh Gorge is the impressive Black Tea-trees, with their deeply textured bark and profuse creamy white flowers. Camping is permitted, and there is no vehicle access to Hugh Gorge Junction. Walker fees and camping fees apply. Multi-day trail use and campsites must be booked online before you arrive. Section 5 of the Larapinta Trail is graded as very hard - a rugged track or marked route with frequent steep and long climbs and descents, suitable for fit people with extensive previous bushwalking experience.
