Description

Stirling Square is a picturesque open space within the Meadow Street heritage precinct, centrally located in the charming town of Guildford, just a 20-minute train or drive east of Perth. The square provides a wonderful parkland vista to walk under majestic sugar gums and soak up Guildford's heritage. You will discover interpretive panels, an Aboriginal yarning circle, a playground, rose beds, a duck pond, and monuments paying tribute to Guildford's military history, including the impressive Guildford 10th Light Horse Statue. Stirling Square, originally called Church Square, was set aside and surveyed in 1829. In the centre of the square is St. Matthew's Church, constructed in 1873. Notable for the way the bricks have been laid alternately lengthwise and pointing inwards to reinforce the structure. The church and square are intrinsically linked to the planning of the town as well as Guildford's military heritage, Anzac Day and Gunner's Day events held each year. Stirling Square is part of the Meadow Street heritage precinct. It continues to be central to community life, with markets and special events held throughout the year.
