Our Lady of Mt Carmel & Sts Peter & Paul Church

The striking Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church was designed and built by Monsignor John Hawes. Wander around this magnificent Romanesque Church to marvel at the exquisite work of this talented architect. Look out for the gargoyle that was a caricature of the Bishop of Geraldton, with whom Hawes was reputedly involved in a bitter dispute at the time of building. Hawes was not only the architect of over 15 magnificent churches in the area but often assumed the role of foreman, carpenter and labourer. His interest in building churches came from his other significant role as a Catholic priest. Visit the priest's house, which is attached to the church and was home to Hawes whilst he was the first resident parish priest of Mullewa. It has been converted into a museum and houses many personal items of this talented man. Considered to be one of his finest works, Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church is a remarkable sight to see and is located in Mullewa, a six-hour drive north of Perth, or one hour east of Geraldton. Mass is celebrated on Sundays at 8.30am.
