Description

The Old Onslow Town Site offers an insight into the lives of the early pioneers of the area. Wander around what remains of the old town ruins and learn about the early days of the town. Originally established in 1885 the town provided a port for pearling luggers following the discovery of pearls nearby. It also serviced the pastoral and timber industries for a number of years. However, by 1924 the mouth of the Ashburton River had silted up causing access problems for the ships. After some exploring it was decided to move the town 18km up the coast to where today you will find the small coastal town of Onslow. At the Old Town, you can still see the stone buildings that were once the police station, gaol, post office, hospital and magistrates home. Visit the Old Onslow Cemetery to see the gravestones of the pioneers which are still remarkably intact. The Onslow Visitors Centre in today's town of Onslow was one of the original buildings of the old town which was later moved to its current location. It houses interesting memorabilia and artefacts from the original town site. Onslow is approximately 1,500 kilometre north of Perth and flights are available directly to Onslow a few times per week.
