Description

Located north of the Derby town site, the jetty experiences the biggest tidal range in Australia – up to an incredible 12 metres. See massive tidal movements and be amazed by the power of the ocean at Derby Jetty in the Kimberley region. It’s a great place to go fishing but make sure you check the tides. The best times to visit are two to three hours on either side of the high tide. You can catch mud crabs, catfish, sharks, salmon and the occasional barramundi. While the water looks inviting, don’t be tempted to swim as saltwater crocodiles are found in the area. The jetty has an interesting history. Its current structure was built in the early 1960s and replaced a wooden jetty from 1885. Back then it was used for the export of live cattle. You can see a pictorial version of the jetty’s history, the seasons, and the wildlife of the area at Centenary Pavilion at the entrance to the jetty on a large mosaic tile floor. Here, you’ll also find seating, toilets, a kiosk and restaurant which opens between April and December. The jetty is lit at night making it the perfect place to watch the sunset.
