Description

Just a short ferry ride from Brisbane, Gheebulum Kunungai (Moreton Island) National Park and Moreton Island Recreation Area lies a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Tall sand dunes, miles of sandy beaches, crystal clear creeks and lagoons, coastal heath, rocky headlands and abundant wildflowers make Mulgumpin (Moreton Island) a jewel in Moreton Bay. Come for the day or take your time on an extended camping adventure. Visit Queensland’s first lighthouse at Cape Moreton and stand atop the headland, marvelling in breathtaking island and bay views. Keep an eye out for migrating humpback whales (May to November), turtles, dolphins and other marine animals in the surrounding waters. Climb the southern hemisphere’s tallest vegetated sand dune, Mount Tempest, and be rewarded with panoramic views out over the bay. Wander through the ruins of Rous Battery, a frontline defence in World War II. Stroll over vast sand blows at The Desert, created over thousands of years by currents and prevailing winds moving individual grains of sand. Cool off in Blue Lagoon, a freshwater oasis set amid flowering heathland, perfect for swimming, kayaking and paddleboarding. This park is jointly managed by the island’s traditional owners, the Quandamooka People, and the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS).
