Description

Leahy House was built around 1885 out of locally made Bulloo River mud bricks, with the original deed to the house made out to the Thargomindah Newspaper Company. From there, the house was purchased by Sir Sydney Kidman in the early 1900s. Sir Kidman owned several stations in the region. However, he never lived in his townhouse. Instead, his head manager, Jack ‘Galloping Jack’ Watts, lived in the house and later became a Councillor. Galloping Jack got his nickname by refusing any mode of transport besides him and his horse and always rode flat out! In 1995 Bulloo Shire Council purchased the building, and the Thargomindah Historical Society were entrusted with preserving its history. It is now a museum that’s open to the public seven days a week, providing you with the opportunity to immerse yourself in life in the 1890s.
