Cape Palmerston National Park

Cape Palmerston National Park features sandy dunes, unspoilt beaches and rocky headlands, with Mount Funnel towering to 344 metres. Middens throughout Cape Palmerston are a reminder of the special connection the Yuwibara people have with this place. With a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle you can enjoy nature in this remote and rugged park. Go birdwatching to see ospreys and sea eagles soaring overhead, and white-breasted woodswallows in flowering grasstrees. Look for other birds around the swamp on the road to the camping areas. On the beaches spot migratory shorebirds along with resident shorebirds such as threatened beach stone-curlews. Scramble up Cape Palmerston for breathtaking views towards the Northumberland Islands and Mount Funnel. During winter months spot whales offshore from your vantage point on the cape. Look for turtles in the waters below. Launch your boat on high water from the boat landings at Cape Creek and Widmill Bay and try your luck fishing or crabbing, but remember to be croc wise. Set up camp at Windmill Bay or Cape Creek or pick a spot on the eastern coast. Camping permits are required and fees apply. Access is by high clearance 4WD only. Sand-driving experience is recommended. Beware of large tidal changes.
