St Kilda Pier and Breakwater

The St Kilda Pier is Melbourne's most famous seaside playground. The Pier dates back to the mid 1800's as an early working jetty. The breakwater was later constructed for the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, as a safe harbour for sailing events. The newly renovated pier, at 450 metres in length offers the perfect location for a walk, enjoying a morning coffee from the cascading seating or watch the sunset over the city skyline. St Kilda Breakwater is now home to a colony of Little Penguins. A new penguin viewing boardwalk has been built to improve the penguin viewing experience and provide significant habitat improvements to provide protection for penguins by separating visitors from the sensitive penguin nesting sites. There are shallow areas and often unexpected, submerged objects; therefore, jumping and diving off the pier and other structures is prohibited for public safety. Dogs are permitted on the pier but must be kept on a lead at all times. No dogs or other pets are allowed on the breakwater. The St Kilda Pier is currently under redevelopment. During construction, the penguin viewing area and Pier breakwater will be closed and will reopen following the completion of the redevelopment project.
