Milestones Sculptures

The Milestone Sculptures are situated in two locations: Mackay Park at Wallendbeen and the corner of Parker and Morris Street (near Sacred Heart Central School) in Cootamundra. Officially opened in 1997, these fiber-optic-lit sculptures celebrate the profound significance of the wheat industry in the Cootamundra and Wallendbeen regions. This area has a rich history of producing some of the nation’s finest, award-winning wheat crops, contributing to Australia’s agricultural success. The sculptures serve as a tribute to this legacy, highlighting the importance of wheat farming to the local economy and community identity. The project emerged from a remarkable community effort, transforming the sites into striking landmarks inspired by the "milestone" concept. This idea draws from the historical mileposts used to measure distances between villages and towns in earlier times, symbolising connection, progress, and shared history. Crafted from cast concrete, the sculptures incorporate intricate patterns representing wheat stalks, cut from compressed fibrous cement and painted in the golden hues of wheat. Illuminated by fiber optics, they create a stunning visual experience, especially at night, drawing attention to their artistic and cultural significance. The Milestone Sculptures stand as a proud testament to the resilience and achievements of the region, offering visitors a deeper connection to Cootamundra and Wallendbeen’s agricultural heritage.
