Renmark Paringa Council

The birthplace of Australia's entire irrigation industry

Renmark Paringa sits at the very top of the Riverland, close enough to the Victorian and New South Wales borders that three states nearly meet along this stretch of river. It was here in 1887 that the Chaffey brothers established Australia's first large-scale irrigation scheme, turning dry mallee scrub into the fruit-growing country that still defines the district today. The PS Industry, a restored paddle steamer, still sits moored at Renmark, a floating reminder of the river trade that once connected it all. This corner of the state has always looked toward the water for its next idea.
