Hinchinbrook Area

Australia's tallest waterfall, and an island wild enough to need a permit

Wallaman Falls drops further in one sheer plunge than any other waterfall in the country, a single 268-metre fall crashing into rainforest below. Offshore, Hinchinbrook Island holds Australia's largest island national park, mountainous and genuinely wild enough that walking the Thorsborne Trail requires a permit and real planning. Ingham anchors the mainland side, its streets shaped by generations of Italian cane farmers who settled here and never really left. Cast a line in fresh or salt water, barramundi inland, reef species further out. This stretch of coast marks the southern edge of the Wet Tropics, rainforest running almost to the sand.
