Gulf Area

This is some of the most remote country left in Australia, nine rivers threading through wilderness before finally reaching the Gulf of Carpentaria. Borroloola anchors the region as its main service town, a genuine outpost on the McArthur River rather than anywhere built for crowds. The wetlands here hold significant birdlife and, for those who come prepared, some of the best remote fishing in the Territory at spots like King Ash Bay. Aboriginal communities have called this Country home for generations, their connection to the land older than any road that now crosses it. Out here, the distance between towns says as much as anything else.
