Flinders Area

A near-complete dinosaur skeleton, and a gorge people call a mini Grand Canyon

Out along the Flinders Highway, deep in Queensland's dinosaur country, Hughenden holds one of Australia's most complete fossil discoveries, a full-scale Muttaburrasaurus replica standing in the Flinders Discovery Centre. Just out of town, Porcupine Gorge cuts deep enough into the plains that people call it a mini Grand Canyon, sandstone walls dropping to a permanent waterhole below. Cattle country stretches out on either side, flat and wide, the kind of land that makes the gorge feel even more surprising when it finally appears. Out here, the plains hide more than they show.
