Charters Towers Area

A gold town so grand it earned the nickname "The World"

Jupiter Mosman, an Aboriginal stockman, found gold here in 1871, and within years the town had grown big enough, and self-sufficient enough, to be known simply as The World. Heritage buildings still line the streets to prove it, the Stock Exchange Arcade, City Hall and Post Office Tower all standing from that same boom. Pan for gold at the Miners Cottage, tour the Venus Gold Battery, Australia's largest surviving relic of its kind, or catch a film under the stars at the town's iconic drive-in. Climb Towers Hill for a proper outback view, or spend an afternoon among the district's longhorn cattle. The World earned its name once. It hasn't forgotten.
