Burdekin Area

The Burdekin trades postcard beaches for something wilder, floodplains and wetlands stretching out where the cane fields end, genuine bird habitat most visitors never expect this far north. During crushing season, the same horizon lights up with cane fires instead, one of the last places in the country still burning fields before harvest. The Silver Link Bridge crosses it all between Ayr and Home Hill, 1,103 metres with no solid footing anywhere along its length. Offshore, the SS Yongala wreck ranks among the top ten dive sites on Earth. This is Gudjuda Country, land and water working together long before either bridge or bird count existed.
