Description

Japarta: A Journey to the Gurindji Way + Q&A is a powerful story of listening, learning and cultural connection. The documentary follows Japanese scholar Minoru Hokari, whose deep respect for Gurindji Elders led him on a remarkable journey to understand and share their history on their own terms. Tasked by Gurindji Elders to help tell their stories to the wider world, Hokari lived on Country, immersed himself in community life and learned a new way of understanding history — not just as something recorded, but as something lived, felt and remembered. Given the skin name Japarta, he built lasting bonds that continue to shape conversations about culture, history and reconciliation today. Directed by Andrew Pike and Ann McGrath, the film weaves together Gurindji memories with reflections from Hokari's family and colleagues, creating a moving portrait of a life dedicated to respect, curiosity and cross-cultural understanding. Inspired by the legacy of the 1966 Wave Hill Walk-Off, Japarta highlights the importance of listening to First Nations voices and perspectives. Following the screening, audiences can hear directly from directors Andrew Pike and Ann McGrath in a special Q&A session, exploring the film's creation and the enduring impact of Hokari's work. An inspiring reminder that the art of knowing begins with paying attention.
