Description

Insubstantial Love Stories is an exhibition of work by award-winning artist Todd Fuller, exploring forgotten and overlooked instances of queer love from Australian history. Fuller's work is research-based, finding narratives that sit at the edge of record and memory. This exhibition homes in on Captain Moonlite, an infamous bushranger of local significance who has recently become a queer icon after his burial in Gundagai. Moonlite's final letters reveal his devotion to companion James Nesbitt. Alongside this piece is 1940 – Based on a True Story, a recent speculative work exploring an intimate bond between an Australian pilot and his guardian during World War II. Fuller retells these stories using labour-intensive hand-drawn animations, etching these stories of the past into our present. In doing so, he reclaims the moments of tenderness and desire that were lost and highlights the queer corners of the Australian history books.
