Description

A rare and unique opportunity to see one of the great Greek tragedies performed in the open-air, as they were in classical Athens, in one of the most beautiful locations in Australia. Greek Theatre Now presents Sophocles' Antigone at the Burbidge Amphitheatre, Australian National Botanic Gardens, this Easter long weekend. Directed by Cate Clelland, one of Australia's most experienced Greek theatre directors, and featuring Ella Buckley as Antigone, Ian Russell as Creon and Alastair McKenzie as Haemon, the play explores themes of divine law vs human law, citizenship vs family loyalty, civil disobedience, and the role of the individual and the role of the collective. In English, modern translation. As relevant today as it was 2500 years ago when it premiered in Athens during the birth of democracy.
