Description
Woven is a communal painting, commissioned by Shoalhaven City Council, as part of the Reconciliation Action Plan.
The painting was created through community participation art workshops and conversations held in diverse locations such as Vincentia, Nowra, Ulladulla, and Bomaderry.
At the heart of the painting is a central meeting place that unifies the diverse journeys and beliefs of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members. The surrounding empty space represents a pathway toward an unknown future which like a stone thrown into the water ripples outwards through multiple understandings, perspectives and communities.
As the painting evolved, the form of a woven basket emerged, representing the interwoven histories of the community and the contribution made by collaborative art practice. Embedded into the fabric of the basket is representation of both the Aboriginal Flag and the Union Jack to illustrate the Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal community that makes up the fabric of the Shoalhaven region.
The missing elements of the painting are deliberate asking the audience to reflect on the unfinished process of reconciliation.
